The short answer
| Option | From San José | Approx. cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive or bus + boat from Sierpe | 6–8 h | Boat about US$15–25 per person | Most travelers. Scenic ride through the mangroves |

Prices and schedules change. Confirm with your lodge or operator before you travel.
Option 1: The boat from Sierpe (the classic route)
Most visitors reach Drake Bay by water. You travel to the small river town of Sierpe, then take a boat down the Sierpe River, through the Térraba-Sierpe wetland (one of the largest mangrove forests in Costa Rica), out through the river mouth and along the coast to Drake Bay.
Getting to Sierpe
- By car: about 5–6 hours from San José via the Costanera Sur (Route 34) to Palmar Norte, then 25 minutes to Sierpe. From Uvita it is about 1 hour. Guarded parking near the docks costs a few dollars per day (see our recommended stops below).
- By bus: Tracopa runs from San José to Palmar Norte and Sierpe (6–7 hours). Leave early: the last boats depart mid-afternoon.
- By private transfer: the most comfortable option from the airport or from Uvita, Dominical or Manuel Antonio.
Arriving early? Spend the morning on the river: see our Sierpe mangrove tour guide.
In Sierpe: our recommended stops
The boats to Drake leave from the riverfront in the center of Sierpe. These are the places we use and recommend:
- Puerto Dock Boat Sierpe to Drake · the dock where boats to Drake Bay depart. Open in Google Maps
- Oleaje Sereno · right by the dock: a good place to wait for your boat and to ask about leaving your car. Open in Google Maps
- Donde Jorge · bar, restaurant and boat landing on the river: have lunch before the 11:30 boat or a cold drink when you return. Open in Google Maps

The boat ride
- Shared boats usually leave Sierpe around 11:30 a.m. and in the mid-afternoon (about 3:30–4 p.m.). The trip takes 1 to 1.5 hours and costs roughly US$15–25 per person. Private boats can leave at any time.
- Many lodges include the boat or book it for you. Ask when you reserve.
- The river mouth can be choppy, especially from September to November. Captains time the crossing with the tide; trust them.
Option 2: Fly to Drake Bay
Drake Bay has a small airstrip (airport code DRK) with daily domestic flights from San José. The flight takes about 50 minutes and fares usually start around US$150–200 one way. Lodges arrange the 15–20 minute ride from the airstrip.
Option 3: Drive yourself (4x4 only)
The land route follows the Costanera Sur to Chacarita, then Route 245 toward Puerto Jiménez. Near Rincón, a narrow road heads west through Rancho Quemado to Drake Bay (the village is called Agujitas).
- A 4x4 is required for the last stretch: a mix of gravel, dirt and short paved sections, with steep hills.
- New bridges mean you can avoid the old river crossings. Ask locally about the current route before you go.
- From Chacarita, plan on about 2 hours in the dry season and 3 or more in the rain. Fill the tank in Chacarita: fuel is scarce beyond that point.
- Never cross a swollen river. If in doubt, wait or ask a local.
When to go
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December–April | Dry season. Calmer seas, easier trails, best time for Corcovado. Book early. |
| May–August | Green season. Sunny mornings, afternoon rain, fewer visitors, lush forest. |
| September–November | The wettest months. Rougher boat rides, muddy roads, and some park stations may close. Some lodges close too. |
Once you are there: Corcovado and Caño Island
Corcovado National Park is the reason many people come. Since 2014 every visitor must enter with a certified guide, and entries are managed through SINAC, so book ahead, especially for the Sirena station. From Drake Bay, day trips go by boat to Sirena or to San Pedrillo.
Caño Island, about an hour offshore, is a protected marine reserve with some of the best snorkeling and diving on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Visitor numbers are limited, so reserve in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drive to Drake Bay?
Yes, with a 4x4. The road from Rincón through Rancho Quemado is slow but passable; new bridges avoid the old river crossings. In heavy rain, the boat from Sierpe is the safer choice.
How long is the boat from Sierpe?
About 1 to 1.5 hours, with a wet landing on the beach at the end.
Do I need a guide for Corcovado?
Yes. A certified guide is mandatory for every visitor. Your lodge or a local operator can arrange the guide and the park reservation.
Where should I leave my car?
If you take the boat, use one of the guarded lots near the docks in Sierpe. Do not leave valuables in the car.
