Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica: a long, quiet beach at the mouth of the Golfo Dulce

A ribbon of sand between the mangroves and the sea, a short boat ride from Golfito. Zancudo is for slow days: long walks, calm morning swims, mangrove kayaking and some of the best fishing in Costa Rica.

Walk one of the longest beaches in the south

Zancudo is a long, dark-sand beach lined with palms and driftwood, with the gulf on one side and the open Pacific on the other. Mornings are calm and empty; evenings bring sunsets over the Osa Peninsula.

Kayak the mangroves

Behind the beach, the estuary of the Río Coto Colorado is lined with mangroves where herons, kingfishers, crocodiles and fish nurseries thrive. Go with a local guide at high tide.

Sport fishing

Zancudo has some of the best inshore and offshore fishing in the country, with roosterfish, snook, tuna, sailfish and marlin. Several lodges run catch-and-release charters.

When to go

December to April is dry, sunny and best for fishing. The green season brings afternoon rain and bigger waves on the southern end.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Playa Zancudo?

The easiest way is the water taxi from Golfito, about 30 minutes across the gulf. By road it is around 1–1.5 hours from Golfito via Río Claro and Conte on partly unpaved roads; a bus runs daily.

Can you swim at Zancudo?

Yes, the northern end of the beach, near the mouth of the gulf, usually has calm water. The southern end gets bigger waves for bodyboarding and surf.

Are there ATMs or a gas station in Zancudo?

No. Bring enough cash from Golfito or Ciudad Neily. Some small shops sell fuel by the liter.
