The short answer
- Heart of the season: Uvita and Marino Ballena, home of the Whale and Dolphin Festival (16th edition in 2026).
- Two migrations: southern humpbacks from July to November (strongest August to October) and northern humpbacks from December to April.
- Same everywhere: they are the same migrations and the same whales, so the months are the same from Uvita to Drake Bay and the Golfo Dulce.
- Also seen in: Drake Bay and the Golfo Dulce, a Whale Heritage Site since 2023.
- Dolphins: all year, in all three places. No place can guarantee whales.
Three places, one season
The humpbacks travel along the whole Pacific coast of Osa, so the two seasons and their months are the same from Uvita to the Golfo Dulce. What changes is the setting, the operators and the extras. In Puerto Jiménez, Golfito, Zancudo and Pavones, the easiest way to find a whale or dolphin trip is to ask at your lodging.
| Place | Best months | What is special and where you board |
|---|---|---|
| Uvita and Costa Ballena Canton of Osa | Same as all of Osa. Highest chance: September and early October (ICT) | Marino Ballena National Park, the Whale Tail sandbar and the annual festival. The best-organized place, with the most operators. Tours of 2.5–4 hours, roughly US$60–120. From the beach at Uvita or Bahía Ballena; you wade to the boat |
| Drake Bay and Caño Island Canton of Osa | Same as all of Osa: July to November (strongest August to October) and December to April | Whales, dolphin pods that can number in the hundreds, and Caño Island in the same trip. One operator lists a full-day tour at about US$120; this is an operator’s own figure. From the main beach of Drake Bay; whales are also seen on the way to Caño and the Corcovado coast |
| Golfo Dulce: Golfito and the gulf Neighbor: canton of Golfito | Same as all of Osa: July to November (strongest August to October) and December to April | A sheltered gulf and a Whale Heritage Site since 2023. Resident bottlenose dolphins all year. Whales are usually seen from a distance. Marina Bahía Golfito is the departure point named in our sources; ask lodges in Puerto Jiménez and Zancudo about gulf trips |

Month by month across Osa
| Month | Chance of whales | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| December – April | Fewer | Northern Hemisphere humpbacks pass in smaller numbers; dry season and calmer seas. |
| May – June | Rare | The gap between seasons. Dolphins, turtles and mantas are the main sightings. |
| July | Building | Southern Hemisphere humpbacks begin to arrive. |
| August – October | Best | The strongest window everywhere, often with mothers and calves. Uvita’s Whale and Dolphin Festival is in the first weekend of September. |
| November | Tail end | The southern season fades. Sources disagree on when it ends, so confirm with your operator. |

Why Uvita is the heart of the season
Uvita is where Osa’s whale tourism grew up. Marino Ballena National Park protects the coast, boats leave from the beach, the Whale Tail sandbar is a landmark in itself, and every September the town hosts the Whale and Dolphin Festival (first held in 2009; 4–6 September in 2026, the 16th edition). Most whale operators in Osa are based here, so you will find the widest choice of times and prices. Whale watching in Uvita →
Drake Bay: whales with Caño Island and Corcovado
In Drake the whales come with the rest of the adventure. Operators run dedicated whale and dolphin tours from the main beach, and during the season whales are also seen on boat rides to Caño Island and along the Corcovado coast. Dolphin pods here can be very large. The two seasons are the same as in Uvita. Drake Bay guide → · Caño Island: snorkel or dive →
Golfo Dulce: a sheltered gulf next door
The Golfo Dulce is not in the canton of Osa: Golfito and the eastern shore belong to the canton of Golfito, and Puerto Jiménez has been a canton of its own since 2022. But it sits between the Osa Peninsula and the mainland, shares the same conservation area, and is an easy trip from Osa. It was certified a Whale Heritage Site in 2023, the first in Latin America. The humpbacks follow the same two seasons as the rest of Osa: July to November, strongest from August to October, and again from December to April. Bottlenose dolphins live in the gulf all year, and seven species appear regularly. In the gulf, whales are usually seen at a distance, not up close. Golfo Dulce guide → · Golfito → · Puerto Jiménez →
Which one should I choose?
| If you are… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Staying on the Costa Ballena (Uvita, Ojochal, Dominical) | Take the tour from Uvita and, if you can, line it up with the tide for the Whale Tail. |
| Going to Drake Bay for Corcovado | Add a whale and dolphin tour, or ask whether your Caño Island trip can include a whale stop in season. |
| Visiting Golfito, Zancudo or Puerto Jiménez | Ask for a gulf trip. Expect dolphins almost every time and whales in season, usually at a distance. |
| Only a few days and one chance | Go from late August to early October, when sightings are most likely everywhere, and choose the place that fits the rest of your trip; no place can promise whales. |
The rules protect the whales
- Boats stay at least 100 m from whales and 50 m from dolphins, with no more than two boats and 30 minutes per encounter.
- No swimming or diving with whales and dolphins. Choose another operator if one offers it.
- Ask the captain to explain the rules before departure and choose operators with certified guides.

Frequently asked questions
When is whale season in Osa?
There are two. Humpbacks from the Southern Hemisphere arrive from about July to November, with August to October the strongest. Humpbacks from the Northern Hemisphere pass from about December to April, in smaller numbers. May and June are the quietest months. Dolphins live in Osa waters all year. The months are the same everywhere in Osa, because they are the same migrations and the same whales.
Is Uvita better than Drake Bay for whales?
Uvita is the best-known and best-organized place: a marine national park, many operators and the annual Whale and Dolphin Festival. Drake Bay and the Golfo Dulce see the same migrations, so choose by where your trip is. Do not rearrange a whole itinerary just for the whales, because no place can promise a sighting.
Can I see whales from Drake Bay?
Yes. Operators in Drake run whale and dolphin tours from the main beach, and whales are also seen by chance on boat rides to Caño Island and the Corcovado coast during the season. The season is the same as in Uvita: July to November, strongest from August to October, and again from December to April.
What is special about the Golfo Dulce?
It is a sheltered tropical gulf and, since 2023, a Whale Heritage Site, the first in Latin America. Bottlenose dolphins live there all year, and humpbacks arrive from July to November and, in smaller numbers, from December to April, the same two seasons as the rest of Osa. The gulf is in the canton of Golfito, next to the canton of Osa.
Are Golfito and Puerto Jiménez part of the canton of Osa?
No. Golfito is in its own canton, and Puerto Jiménez has been a canton of its own since 2022. We include them in our Osa region because they share the Golfo Dulce and the Osa Conservation Area, and we label them as neighbors.
Can I swim with whales in Costa Rica?
No. Swimming or diving with whales and dolphins is prohibited, and boats must keep their distance and limit the time near the animals. An operator that offers it is breaking the rules; choose another one.
