Towns & bases
Dominical
Surf town at the mouth of the Barú River, 20 minutes from the Nauyaca waterfalls.
Uvita
Main town of the Costa Ballena: banks, supermarkets, whale tours and the entrances to Marino Ballena.
Ojochal
Quiet village known for its restaurants, the sea caves of Playa Ventanas and the turtle reserve.
Sierpe
River town in the Térraba-Sierpe wetland: mangrove tours and the boats to Drake Bay.
Drake Bay (Agujitas)
No paved road: arrive by boat from Sierpe or by small plane. Base for Caño Island and San Pedrillo.
Puerto Jiménez
The only real town in the south of the peninsula: bank, fuel, flights and guides. Base for La Leona.
Cabo Matapalo
Rainforest down to the sand, right-hand point breaks and scarlet macaws at the tip of the peninsula.
Golfito
Old banana port on the Golfo Dulce, with the duty-free zone and water taxis across the gulf.
Playa Zancudo
Long, quiet beach about 30 minutes by water taxi from Golfito. No ATM or gas station: bring cash.
Pavones
Home of one of the longest left-hand waves in the world, best with south swells from April to October.
Punta Banco
Community turtle project since 1996, with hatchling releases from November to January. The road ends here.

Whale Tail · Marino Ballena
Sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail, walkable at low tide. Humpback whales from July to October and December to April.
Playa Ventanas
Sea caves you can walk into at low tide, a few minutes north of Ojochal.
Reserva Playa Tortuga
Turtle conservation and research reserve founded in 2009. Contact them before you visit.
Nauyaca Waterfalls

Térraba-Sierpe Wetland
The largest mangrove forest on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, explored by boat or kayak from Sierpe.

Which Corcovado ranger stations are open?
In October 2026, San Pedrillo and La Leona are open for day visits with a certified guide, while Sirena, Los Patos and El Tigre are closed. Status changes; confirm with your guide or SINAC before booking.
